The Event
LIVE it Up! is one of the longest running third-party events in support of the UHN Foundation, and is one of the foremost events celebrating excellence in transplantation at UHN. Since its inception in 2009, LIVE it Up! (formerly International Pub Night) has raised over $315,000 for the Jürgen Mummenhoff Memorial Fund in Transplantation.
Bringing together transplant recipients, organ donors, members of UHN's Transplant Team, community leaders, family, and friends, the event raises transplant awareness and highlights advances in research and innovation. Through powerful storytelling, live music, and meaningful conversation, LIVE it Up! continues to celebrate the gift of life.
The Fund
The Jürgen Mummenhoff Memorial Fund in Transplantation was established in 2008 at Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation, UHN. Although taken from us much too soon, his family and friends were so grateful of the extra 15 years that we were given with Jürgen, through the gift of life that he received when receiving a liver transplant in 1993. Jürgen was so deeply appreciative of this miraculous gift and truly enjoyed his second chance at life to the fullest.
The Jürgen Mummenhoff Memorial Fund in Transplantation supports education and innovation initiatives in the area of transplantation, such as the biannual Mummenhoff Visiting Professorship in Transplantation lecture. The world’s leading experts in the field of transplantation are brought in to educate UHN’s team of transplant health care specialists on the latest ground-breaking innovations and advances in organ transplantation. In addition to the professorship, the fund also supports a cutting-edge projects in virtual reality (VR) within the Toronto Video Atlas for Liver, Pancreas & Transplant Surgery.
The Campaign
More than ever, patients need life-saving transplants to survive. They need new treatments and cures. They need our help to LIVE ON. Diabetes, heart failure, liver cancer, kidney disease and lung disease are just a few of the chronic illnesses that disrupt the lives of millions of Canadians and their families. For many, the organ damage they cause is irreversible and a transplant becomes the only hope for a second chance at life. The economic and societal burdens of these diseases are monumental. As our population ages and lives longer, the urgent need to stop them before they cause permanent damage, will only intensify.
The Ajmera Transplant Centre at the University Health Network (UHN) is the largest and most comprehensive transplant program in Canada.
As one of the top five transplant programs in North America, it is known around the world as experts in kidney, liver, lung, heart, pancreas and intestinal transplant procedures.
The Ajmera Transplant Centre uses a coordinated team approach to care for all transplant patients. This focus helps the program develop unparalleled advances in transplantation and it provides the best medical and surgical care for patients from all over the world. The Ajmera Transplant Centre also attracts and develops some of the world's best leaders in surgical innovation, transplant medicine, nursing and related areas of study.
In addition to performing more than 700 organ transplants each year, the Centre provides lifelong care for more than 6,000 transplant patients in over 550 communities across Canada.
